The Mathvance Method: 5 Steps to Math Mastery

Math progress doesn't happen by accident. Behind every child who suddenly "gets it" is a process — a sequence of steps that moved them from confusion to confidence. The Mathvance Method makes that process visible and repeatable.

It has five steps: Assess, Inform, Plan, Practice, Master. They work in order, and each one depends on the last.

Here is what each step actually means.

Step 1: Assess

Before anything else, you need to know where your child actually stands. Not where their class is. Not where their last report card suggested. Where they genuinely are — the skills they have locked in, and the gaps that are blocking them.

The Assess step is a diagnostic placement test designed to find that line precisely. It doesn't require teacher input or test prep. It takes about ten minutes, and when it's done, you have a clear starting point that the rest of the process is built on.

Assessment isn't about judgment. It's about knowing the truth so you don't waste time on the wrong things.

Step 2: Inform

The placement test captures what the app observes. But you know things no app can see.

You've sat with your child at the kitchen table while they struggled. You've read teacher comments. You may have MCAS scores, STAR assessment results, or report cards sitting in a drawer. That context matters enormously.

The Inform step is where that outside knowledge comes in. Standardized test scores show how your child performs relative to grade-level expectations. Teacher recommendations reveal specific skill gaps. Past reports show trends over time.

Together, what the assessment measures and what you know paint a complete picture — one that's more accurate than either source alone.

Step 3: Plan

With a real starting point established, it's possible to build a real plan.

Not a generic "work on fractions" suggestion. An actual sequence — this skill, then this one, then this one — that builds from where your child is toward where they need to be. A plan that accounts for what they've already mastered, what they're close on, and what needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

The Plan step produces exactly that: a personalized learning path generated from the Assess and Inform data. It tells you not just what to work on, but in what order — and why that order matters.

Step 4: Practice

A plan is only as good as what happens next. The Practice step is where real progress is made — not through one long session a week, but through short, focused daily practice built around the skills in the plan.

Practice in the Mathvance method is adaptive. Questions adjust in difficulty as a student works, staying in the zone where learning happens fastest: challenging enough to require effort, easy enough not to cause shutdown. Each session is short enough to be sustainable and specific enough to be effective.

This is where students spend most of their time in the system. And it's where the data gets richer with each session, making the plan smarter as you go.

Step 5: Master

Practice without milestones loses momentum. The Master step gives students a clear target: demonstrate consistent accuracy on a concept before it's considered closed.

Mastery isn't defined by how long you've worked on something. It's defined by what you can reliably do under real conditions. Each concept has a checkpoint — a short assessment that confirms the skill is genuinely locked in before moving on.

When a concept is mastered, it's off the plan. Progress is visible, momentum is real, and the next skill becomes the focus.


Why the order matters

These five steps are not interchangeable. Practicing without a plan means working on the wrong things. Planning without informing means missing half the picture. Assessing without acting means nothing changes.
