The Math Concepts That Trip Up Second Graders — and Why

Second grade is where the numbers get bigger and the strategies that worked in first grade start to show their limits. Children who relied on counting on their fingers run out of fingers. Children who didn't fully grasp place value in first grade find it suddenly everywhere in second.

Here is what causes the most difficulty.

Regrouping (what used to be called "carrying")

Adding 47 + 35 requires regrouping: 7 + 5 = 12, write the 2, carry the 1. Children who understand place value can follow this logic. Children who don't — who think of 47 as just a label rather than 4 tens and 7 ones — find regrouping arbitrary and forgettable.

The same problem appears in subtraction, where regrouping requires "borrowing" — taking a ten and breaking it into ones. This is genuinely confusing if a child hasn't internalized what tens and ones actually mean.

Watch for a child who can add without regrouping accurately but makes consistent errors the moment regrouping appears. The arithmetic isn't the problem; the place-value concept underneath it is.

Three-digit numbers

Second grade extends place value to hundreds. A child who has a shaky understanding of tens and ones now has to manage hundreds, tens, and ones simultaneously.

Reading and writing three-digit numbers is straightforward. Understanding them — knowing that 347 is 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 7 ones, and that this matters for adding and subtracting — is harder.

Telling time and counting money

Time and money are applied math — real-world contexts that require layering abstract concepts onto everyday objects. They also require skills that aren't purely mathematical: knowing that an hour has 60 minutes, that a quarter is worth 25 cents, that the minute hand moves faster than the hour hand.

Many second graders can count money accurately with coins of a single type but struggle when different coins are mixed together. The underlying skill is skip counting — by 5s, 10s, and 25s simultaneously — which requires more number sense than simple counting.

Measurement and data

Second grade introduces rulers, comparing lengths, and basic graphs. The confusion here is usually conceptual: length is the gap between two points, not the number of tick marks. Children who count the lines on a ruler instead of the spaces get every measurement slightly off.

The fluency gap

By the end of second grade, children are expected to add and subtract within 20 fluently — meaning quickly and without counting. Some children reach this milestone without much difficulty. Others are still counting at the end of second grade, which creates problems in third grade where the expectation is that those facts are automatic.

If your second grader is still using fingers for 8 + 6 in the spring, that's worth addressing before third grade begins.


Second grade is a building year. The concepts aren't dramatic, but the gaps they leave if unaddressed are significant. Small course corrections now prevent much larger ones later.
